What are brompheniramine; pseudoephedrine extended-release capsules? (Back to top)
BROMPHENIRAMINE; PSEUDOEPHEDRINE (Bromfed® and others) contain a decongestant and an antihistamine. It can help relieve runny nose, nasal or sinus congestion (stuffiness), sneezing, and itchy or watery eyes that may occur with hay fever (seasonal allergies). Generic brompheniramine; pseudoephedrine products are available.

What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine? (Back to top)
They need to know if you have any of the following conditions:
•asthma, emphysema, or other lung disease
•blood vessel disease
•diabetes
•pain or difficulty passing urine (urinary retention)
•glaucoma or other eye disease
•heart disease or heart rhythm problems
•high or low blood pressure
•kidney disease
•liver disease
•over active thyroid
•prostate trouble
•seizure disorder
•stomach or intestinal problems
•wear contact lenses
•an unusual or allergic reaction to brompheniramine, pseudoephedrine, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
•pregnant or trying to get pregnant
•breast-feeding

How should I take this medicine? (Back to top)
Take the brompheniramine; pseudoephedrine capsules by mouth. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Swallow the capsules with a drink of water. This medication may be taken with food if it upsets your stomach. Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often than directed.

Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.

Elderly patients over 60 years old may have a stronger reaction to this medicine and need smaller doses.

What if I miss a dose? (Back to top)
If you miss a dose, and you are taking it on a regular schedule, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose (example - less than 12 hours before your next dose), take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

•alcohol
•ammonium chloride
•amphetamine or other stimulant drugs
•barbiturate medicines for inducing sleep or treating seizures (convulsions)
•bicarbonate, citrate, or acetate products (such as sodium bicarbonate, sodium acetate, sodium citrate, sodium lactate, and potassium citrate)
•bromocriptine
•caffeine
•cocaine
•furazolidone
•linezolid
•medicines for anxiety or sleeping problems, such as diazepam or temazepam (sleeping pills or tranquilizers)
•medicines for chest pain, heart disease, high blood pressure or heart rhythm problems
•medicines for colds and breathing difficulties
•medicines for diabetes
•medicines for hay fever and other allergies
•medicines known as MAO inhibitors, such as phenelzine (Nardil®), tranylcypromine (Parnate®), isocarboxazid (Marplan®), and selegiline (Carbex®, Eldepryl®)
•medicines for mental depression or other mental disturbances
•medicines for migraine
•medicines for movement abnormalities as in Parkinson's disease
•medicines for pain such as codeine, hydrocodone, meperidine, methadone, morphine, oxycodone, propoxyphene, and tramadol
•procarbazine
•some medicines for gastrointestinal problems (such as atropine, dicyclomine, glycopyrrolate, hyoscyamine, or propantheline)
•some medicines for weight loss (including some herbal products, ephedrine, dextroamphetamine)
•St. John's wort
•theophylline
•thyroid hormones

Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check before starting or stopping any of your medicines.

What side effects may I notice from taking with brompheniramine; pseudoephedrine? (Back to top)
Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:
•agitation, anxiety, excitement, irritability, or nervousness
•blurred vision
•chest pain
•confusion
•dizziness or fainting spells
•fast or irregular heartbeat
•increased blood pressure
•increased sweating
•numbness or tingling in the hands or feet
•pain or difficulty passing urine
•rapid or troubled breathing
•severe, persistent, or worsening headache
•sleeplessness (insomnia)
•tremor or muscle contractions
•vomiting

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):
•diarrhea or constipation
•drowsiness or fatigue
•dry mouth
•headache (mild)
•loss of appetite
•rash or reddening of the skin
•stomach upset, nausea

What should I watch for while taking with brompheniramine; pseudoephedrine? (Back to top)
If nervousness, dizziness, sleeplessness, or palpitations occur, stop using this product and consult a health care professional. If brompheniramine; pseudoephedrine extended-release products make it difficult for you to sleep at night; take your last dose of the day at least 12 hours before bedtime.

You may get drowsy or dizzy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs mental alertness until you know how this medicine affects you. To reduce the risk of dizzy or fainting spells, do not stand or sit up quickly, especially if you are an older patient. Alcohol may increase dizziness and drowsiness. Avoid alcoholic drinks.

Your mouth may get dry. Chewing sugarless gum or sucking hard candy, and drinking plenty of water will help.

The brompheniramine in this medicine may cause dry eyes and blurred vision. If you wear contact lenses you may feel some discomfort. Lubricating drops may help. See your ophthalmologist if the problem does not go away or is severe.

If you are receiving skin tests for allergies, tell your physician you are using a product which contains brompheniramine (an antihistamine).

Keep out of the reach of children in a container that small children cannot open.

Store at room temperature, between 15—30 degrees C (59—86 degrees F), unless otherwise specified on the product label. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.
